The Captain's Well

This well, which was immortalized by John Greenleaf Whittier, was dug by a grandson of Anthony and Susannah's daughter, Mary. There is a drinking fountain there, now. But I think it is just city water and not out of that well. But, maybe it is!

This is what it looks like from the street. The plaque is at the back of the site and the well is near the street. To the right as you are facing like this is an old house (see more homes) and on the left is a park or playground area.

On the left panel are the words:
"And if ever I reach
My home again,
Where Earth has springs,
And the sky has rain
I will dig a well
For the passers by,
And none shall suffer
From thirst as I."

And on the right panel:
"Now the Lord be thanked
I am back again,
Where Earth has springs
And the skies have rain,
And the well I promised
By Oman's Sea,
I am digging for Him
In Amesbury."
